As part of our project at 1600 Barclay, Four Twelve Roofing set a simple and seemingly attainable goal – to create one full time hire from within our community. Through the first quarter of this project, we have exceeded this goal and created 3, 30+ hour/week positions for young apprentices.
When entering the homebuilding industry, it is hard to find work if you don’t have experience. Under the tutelage of our experienced carpenters and foremen, we have been able to work with our apprentices for the better part of this year – teaching them all facets of homebuilding. Four Twelve self-performs most of our own work, which allowed us the opportunity to train our apprentices in roofing, siding, masonry, framing, interior carpentry and painting.
Four Twelve’s close relationship with the local community has been helpful in making this program succeed. Through our time in Greenmount West, we have gotten to know our neighbors, community leaders and workforce training programs – such as Project JumpStart, a local Baltimore Workforce Development program. These apprenticeship positions have been invaluable to date – providing quality on-the-job training in addition to good paying and reliable work. Here’s to 3 more homes and continuing to build the locally trained, locally sourced laborpool in Greenmount West and Baltimore.
